Nico joins Ruby for tomorrow’s show at Oakland Museum

Thursday, July 31st, 2008 | Posted by iLL-Literacy | Categories: News, iLL-Shows

When asked if he’s performing at the Oakland Museum with Ruby tomorrow Nico said, “I think so…”

And honestly, considering that it’s summertime and we’re artists, that’s a pretty solid confirmation.

ILL-HOMIE: M.I.S.S. Crew

News, Press, iLL-Homies

Perhaps the act of blogging about blogs is a sign of the times–that we’re falling into a downward spiral of cyber-oblivion and we’re truly plugged into the matrix. WELL, if that’s the case, we might as well fight those sentential in style! (so much geekiness going on right now)

The lovely people at M.I.S.S. Crew (Mama’s International Secret Society) hold down Cali and the rest of the world thoroughly, and when they came through to our It’s Pop It’s Art event earlier this month, they were most certainly stuntin’ like their daddies–err–mamas.

For more of their flossiness that night, click here and here.

ILL-EVENT in OAK: Musiquarium

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 | Posted by iLL-Literacy | Categories: iLL-Events

The lost scrolls of the Bibe-iLL tell of an ancient land known as Oaklantis, where dopeboys and dopegirls from far and wide gather to aquaboogie all night long.  Recently this lost civilization has been discovered, and known to gather on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month at Water Lounge for Musiquarium, where some of the soggiest DJs in the Bay play the cuts to tickle your tentacles (not soggy meaning bad but soggy meaning good).

Come through on Sunday to experience the wet and wild wonderfulness of Musiquarium!  With DJs ShredONE (she DJ’ed our It’s Pop It’s Art event!), Dion Decibels (he made that hotttt P-Funk mix!), HayLow (he’s a Bay-slash-LA jetsetter!), and Wonway (he does hella events we love!).

RSVP here, and for a great IMEEM playlist to moisten you up for Sunday (sorry that sounded gross).

VIDEO: MC K~Swift - Mistaken

Monday, July 28th, 2008 | Posted by iLL-Literacy | Categories: Video, iLL-Homies

MC K~Swift has the baddest necklace collection ever. He’s much more than his bead-bling though, as he’s our numero-uno person to hit up whenever we get into NYC (that man knows every single black person in the city–if you’re a black person in NY and he doesn’t know you, bet he will within the next 3 hours). Check out this quickie he threw up that was featured on Youtube yesterday. Utter sickness, plain and simple.

The Knitting Factory

Friday, July 25th, 2008 | Posted by Adriel | Categories: News

from Adrizzle.com:

Last night my homie Jeannel took me downtown to do a walkthrough of the legendary Knitting Factory, the potential venue for iLL-Literacy’s NYC show in November!

Founded in 1987, Knitting Factory immediately became a staple in the New York music scene, especially for jazz and experimental music. Artists who have rocked its stages in the past include Sonic Youth, Beck, the GZA, and Big Daddy Kane.

The venue houses three stages–the lounge (capacity 100), the taproom (200), and the main stage (400). We’re gunning for the main stage. Our last NY show was in February at the Bowery Poetry Club, and we managed to pull 200 with just two weeks promotion…my hope is that with some more preparation and some Cali charm, we can pack this house in the fall.

I first learned about KF back in ‘04 when a pre-Get Lifted John Legend dropped a live album recorded there. Four years later he’s touring arenas and I see him in Brooklyn rocking a crowd of 10,000. *Ahem* I’m just following footsteps…

With the struggling economy and rocketing rent prices, the Tribeca building, which houses the Knitting Factory, is at risk of being sold when the lease ends in 2009. There are talks of moving KF to Brooklyn, but nothing’s been finalized yet. In the meantime, here’s hoping that we get to play at this landmark venue before it vanishes into history!

ILL-HOMIE: C+ Jewelry

Thursday, July 24th, 2008 | Posted by iLL-Literacy | Categories: iLL-Homies

You know us neo-righteous-bohemian folks always like to say “Yo patna/dunny/son/fam, lets build” when we meet folks that we want to connect/link/form relationships with…well, our iLL-Homie Chris Mueller, founder of C+ Jewelry from the Bay takes that to the next level by actually creating the bling for you to build with, inspired by Lego! Whether it’s earrings, pendants, or knuckle rings, C+ is sure to keep you stacked. We were thrilled to see him come through to our It’s Pop It’s Art event last week, and even more thrilled to see the goodies he has in store for the future!

You’ll be sure to see us rocking this in the near future…but just in case that’s not near enough for you, cop some of his stunningly-well-priced ishh here, and stay tuned to the C+ blog here.

ILL-HOMIE: Kiwi

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 | Posted by iLL-Literacy | Categories: Audio, iLL-Events, iLL-Homies

It seems that, regardless of your niche, tactics, philosophy, or politics, if you’re going to be a rapper, you’ve got to rap about money–having it, not having it, wanting it, taking it, or making it. That’s just the way it is. Well, our iLL-Homie Kiwi takes the classic topic and shows us the other side of that world–literally! Teaming up with Philippine heavyweights Gloc9 and FrancisM, Lil (Ki)weezy’s got the for real dough doe doe doe.

Listen at Kiwi’s Myspace.

Also: Kick it with Kiwi @ Libre in SF on Friday!

ILL-HOMIES: DJ Phatrick + ILL-EVENT: Devil’s Pie Motown Tribute

Monday, July 21st, 2008 | Posted by iLL-Literacy | Categories: iLL-Events, iLL-Homies

Meet DJ Phatrick. He has one of the most impeccable musical tastes ever in the world, ever, but a dry cynic’s humor so he never seems like a groupie, even to the musicians he jocks the hell out of. And now he has a blog. If you’re a fan of yummy music and asshole remarks that you secretly love, this is for you. DJPhatrick.com, snitches.

Now if you’re into that face-to-faceness instead of just interwebneraction (that’s a real word), come on over to Devil’s Pie in San Francisco on Thursday! Our Brooklyn iLL-Homie KJ Butta flies in to provide the goodies for a Motown Tribute! Light years ahead like a young Michael Jackson, baby!

The Bay Area Fam show earlier this month was oh so jumpin, we had to post this video to show all the unfortunate souls who didn’t make it (including myself…woh woh woh…). Anyway, it looks like the stage is damn near about to crash down. I’m soooo excited about this new Bay Area renaissance that’s in the midst…look out for it, we’re gunnin for you!
